Moving the fight against cancer to a new arena
Fifty years ago, the war against cancer was waged in laboratories and research centers where scientists worked to break cancer's secret code. Each breakthrough provided the keys to more effective cancer prevention, detection and treatment methods. While the American Cancer Society is still dedicated to research efforts, the past few years have seen a new weapon added to our fight - public policy. Our growing presence at local city halls, state capitols and the National Capitol in Washington, D.C., has helped us expand the battlefield and is proving effective in saving even more lives.

Elected officials at all levels of government make decisions every day that impact the lives of more that 8 million cancer survivors, their families and potential cancer patients. The American Cancer Society's Action Network - composed of concerned citizens like you - works for a number of cancer-related issues including:

  • Increased federal funding for cancer research

  • Improved access to quality health care for all Americans

  • The rights of cancer survivors and patients

  • Tobacco control efforts, particularly regarding youth access
