Thank You 2010
Participants
It
wasn’t the best morning on May 8th for a Sole Burner. It had rained
most of the day before, it was misting early in the morning, there
had been snow in the area, it was 40 degrees, the winds were
unabated over the College Avenue Bridge, but wait a minute…
Nearly 6,000 participants and volunteers made it to City Park! We
gathered together to run or walk to support those we love who have
battled cancer and to reduce the impact of the disease in the
future. T-shirts were displayed over a sweatshirt if we had to do
that, but if we ran or walked for someone – it was visible! We were
part of a record registration this year and didn’t know it yet, but
we had exceeded the goal of raising $350,000(net). We conquered the
Hill of Hope and crossed the finish line remembering or thinking of
a loved one and had both smiles and tears. Some of us checked the
clock to confirm that we had a great race or claimed the clock was
wrong if we were a few steps slow. The food tent was well stocked
and we stayed around to see how others did or catch up with a
friend. We ran into Baby Cakes the clown, a cancer survivor who
provided entertainment. So maybe it was a pretty good Sole Burner
after all!
As always, there are areas that can be done better. The committee
will work to improve the registration processes and have the finish
go a bit smoother for our 29th annual Sole Burner on May 7th of
2011.
Thank you for being a part of the 2010 Sole Burner.
