Thank You 2008
Participants
The
26th annual American Cancer Society Sole Burner held May 10th turned
out to be one of the best ever. We had over 6,000 registrants, had
160 cancer survivors participate, 3,525 people running or walking in
honor of someone and over 170 family, corporate, school or church
teams. Best of all, we have exceeded our goal of $309,000 (net) to
fight cancer!
Many teams and families stayed together the whole race, encouraged
each other up the hill and smiled or held hands crossing the finish
line. Some teams were formed specifically to honor or remember an
individual. Others crossing the finish were surprised to find out
that they could do a 5K as fast as they did and looked forward to
the next run or walk. A few went right for the water, but it was a
day of unity for all.
Things were not perfect. We were short a few shirts, someone was
disappointed when the last chocolate chip cookie was taken ahead of
them, a male entrant was listed as a winner in a female division,
but those things will happen. What was perfect was the spirit,
volunteers and number of participants and the generosity of our
sponsors and underwriters. Oh, the weather wasn’t too bad either!
We look forward to the year ahead. Unfortunately, we know that
people will still get news on having cancer and lives will be
uprooted. However, we also know that because of events like Sole
Burner we can provide services and support to cancer patients in the
local area and provide funding for what we know someday will be a
cure for some or all forms of cancer.
Thank you to everyone for participating.
